Barpak is a beautiful village located about 140 miles north-east of capital Kathmandu. It is a popular tourist destination inhabited chiefly by the ethnic Ghale and Gurung communities. The village perched on a hillock on the lap of Manasalu Mountain range lies about 1900 metres above the sea-level.
Barpak is the epicentre of the April 25 earthquake. So the village suffered a lot of damage in terms of life and property. All of the private houses, public buildings and infrastructure were reduced to rubble. 70 persons died and a lot of people lost their cattle - their main source of livelihood.
In the aftermath of the devastating quake on Saturday, local Gothelal Gurung, 66, of Mandre, Barpak VDC was found roaming around a pile of rubble that once used to be his home.
